I missed most of the discussion of the Challenger blowing up because, at
the time, I really didn't care. The readings I'm doing for a class this
week, though, mention that two of the design engineers had been saying
for the previous six months that the o-ring problem could cause an
catastrophic explosion. The company completely blew them off, finally
overriding their statement that the Challenger launch would *probably*
blow up and telling NASA to go ahead with it. The engineer who made a
big stink about it afterwards was completely screwed over by the
company, went on sick leave, and eventually was put on the "long-term
disability" list.
Bleah.
