Some people who have trouble sleeping take up yoga. They say the
exercise helps a lot and so does the meditation. Personally I find that
any form of exercise during the day (like 30 minutes of jogging or
swimming or something aerobic, plus some muscle limbering and
stretching) helps a great deal. They reduce muscle tension, which is
often the cluprit when i lie awake at night.
Your diet may also be at fault. Caffeine, sugar and MSG have been known
to keep people awake. If you limit the sugar and try not to have ANY
late in the day, ditto caffeine and MSG, you might find yourself better
able to go to sleep.
If it's mental stress that's keeping you up, I find that the best things
is to do something about it (like accomplish something on a problem set,
or clean my room to locate the bills) or, if that's not possible, engage
in a chat with a friend or read an engaging but not-challenging book.
Ie, escape from the source of the tension.
Good luck. SDleep well.
