Gene Spafford (spaf@cs.purdue.edu) just announced his "retirement" from
the various roles he has played in maintaining various lists for Usenet.
I don't know the exact circumstances -- whether anything recent has
particularly provoked this -- but I'm really depressed that the net is
so good at taking people who are optimistic about the potential of
electronic communication, and by throwing wave after wave of clueless,
flaming, rude, careless people at them, sap their optimism and replace
it with cynicism in its stead. Sigh.
