Subject: Holiday Spirit indeed...
--text follows this line--
To the editor:
Michael Chung's column, "Boston's Christmas Trees Express Warm
Holiday Spirit" (Dec. 8), is warm and friendly. Perhaps {\it too}
warm and friendly.
"Whether a tree or a `non-denominational holiday shrub' is used," Mr.
Chung writes, "the meaning is the same: the holiday season should be a
time to remember and express our love for our fellow man and religious
figure, as the case may be." I assume this is the meaning of the
Christmas season, but Khanukah's message is that we must be ready to
resist, militarily if necessary, those who would deny us the freedom
to worship as we choose.
Please don't get me wrong: I think Christmas trees and lights are
pretty and cheerful in the long, cold winter nights. (Well, except
for the red-bulbed candidate for MIT art in front of the Student
Center.) But Christmas is not Khanukah, the birth of one regarded as
the Messiah is of somewhat more importance than the only non-Biblical
Jewish holiday, and "Peace on Earth" conveys a different spirit than
"Whoever is for God, join our rebellion."
