In my case, just calling her and talking about random stuf while she
was out of town (this was over Christmas break) *did* work, although I
didn't have explicit motives at the time. I found out later (after we
were dating) that she was really pleased I had called her, and that if
I hadn't she probably wouldn't have made any effort for us to get
together after she returned, at least not right away.
