As someone who's also tangled on religious issues with family members, let
me offer another point of view here...

I come from a fairly religious family (Jewish), but personally I'm an atheist.
Quite honestly, I'd prefer if the subject of religion never came up.  I get
my share of newspaper clippings in the mail on various subjects (issues of
belief and such that I'm really not interested in).  Out of self-defense, I
sent them the alt.atheism FAQ just for another point of view, and it didn't
penetrate at all (not that I expected it to, just to give them other words
basically carrying my point of view).

We're not on bad terms at all, just on this issue we don't see eye to eye.
I'd like nothing better than to be left alone on the subject.  I don't know
your family history, but your mom might, too.  She's seen the article, so
she knows; if she doesn't like it, nothing you can do will change that.
Unfortunate, perhaps (although that's relative; my parents consider it
unfortunate that I'm not more religious than I am), but that's the way it is.
