Hey! Writing software involves a _lot_ of creativity (and, in my
opinion, a lot of discipline).. it's just something which only other
hackers will appreciate.
Kind of like that class of 20th century music which is explicitly written
for _small_ audiences. It's really neat structurally, very
challenging to play, but, to the untrained ear, sounds like a big
mishmash of dissonance and atonality.
Merely competant? Huh? I don't see myself as being "merely
competant" (but I know I have an ego problem :-) ) but doing things
like Animals in TeX, or Newton's Method in PostScript strikes me as
particularly creative. In my opinion, the key to being excellent as a
"hacker" is not lots of experience with different systems, but rather
the ability to learn about and master new systems quickly... it's not
knowing everything, but rather knowing where to look to find out.
