Because they know already that their lives will be meaningless drudgey
piles of carp and so they hate everyone who looks different, especially if
-- the other people look like their lives are MORE crumby (like
the poor, immigrants, and such), or
-- the other people look like their lives are LESS crumby (like
students and other barneys).
That's pretty much everybody who's different from them. Could be worse:
in Cambodia and parts of Texas, you could get shot for wearing glasses.
In Blazing Saddles, The Kid had a good line explaining this to Black Bart,
something like, "Good, hardworking people, the salt of the earth -- you
know: morons."
