If someone knocks on your front door, and you're in the middle of
a conversation, are you then free to ignore them, since if it's
really important they can shout?

Given an announcing answering machine, ignoring the phone if one
is having a conversation is fine.  But, as was pointed out, the
phrase, ``excuse me for a moment'' exists for a reason, as does
the question ``can I call you back later?''
