When you make a big mistake like that, my experience is that the best
thing to do is Apoligize Immediately. In this case, that would mean
something like...send a follow up note explaining that you were wrong,
you know you were wrong, you were exhausted (extenuating circumstance)
but of course that doesn't excuse you... you hope you'll be allowed the
chance to prove that you can also be a good human being... you feel
terrible...
If you send something like that out you will limit the loss of respect
that the rabbi is currently experiencing for you, and will have a chance
to limit how far word of your blooper spreads. You might even get your
question answered...
