That sounds kind of familiar... in my case, it was off-and-on, over
the course of a few years.  We eventually got together and did
something about it; it was fun for a while, whatever it was -- there
are aspects I'm still trying to analyze -- then it kind of fell apart
for a while.

If this person is a good friend, you ought to be able to survive a bit
of passion and falling-apart.  (Conversely: If your friendship can't
survive it, was your friendship as strong as you thought?)  Just know
what both your expectations are, and be able to talk about it if
things change; if you screw it up badly enough, you can lose an SO and
a friend both.
