I don't believe in ``original intent'' in theatre; that's not what
``traditionalist'' means. It means thinking about what the lines mean,
and acting -- not hamming -- accordingly. Take, for example, the ENO
Mikado (which was set in 1920's Bristol) or even the Harvard G&S Patience
of 1988 (which was set in the hip [19]sixties). Those were both
reinterpreted -- but they were *interpreted*. That's all that I ask.
Trial by Jury is about hypocrasy; Sorcerer is about hypocrasy and
honor -- lets face it, in a well-done production the audience should
feel that the wrong person died. But as far as I could tell from the
HG&SP productions, Trial was about
slapstick and Sorcerer was about how close to real sex you could get
at the Aggasiz without Harvard U. shutting you down.
