job search and clerical errors

I got home today to find a note for me saying, "Call so-and-so at
Silicon Graphics about a job offer." I was very glad to see this,
since they are my second choice... After several *hours* of phone
tag, I finally got hold of the guy. He said, "We have decided to
offer you a summer job at such-and-such group [my first choice]. Are
you interested?"
I said something like, "Sure, but I'm more interested in full-time
employment at this point." He was confused. It turned out that someone
over there had, for some reason, written "SUMMER" instead of "PERMANENT"
on my resume! So I talk to him a bit, and it turns out that not only
are there no permanent positions open at that group, but that they
only hire people with a master's or a PhD anyway.
So, sa far as I can tell, I lose on two counts: that someone at SGI
made a clerical error, and hopefully has not shut me out of a chance
at a full-time job somewhere else in the company; and that SGI and
certain other companies hire only masters and PhDs to do 3D graphics
and visualization. Which is, of course, what I'm best at, and is what
is all over my resume.
...sigh...
