It probably would. I went to the minyan here a few weeks ago, because
I got a zephyrgram Friday at 3:45 saying, ``Andrew, we just got a
cancellation and we're one short for tomorrow morning! Can you
come to make the minyan?'' Besides that one time, outside of Yom
Kippur (I've been home for all the other holidays), I haven't been to
shul up here since Simchat Torah 1989.
Why don't I go? It's probably because I don't feel comfortable with
the MIT Jewish community, and I don't have the chutzpah (positive sense)
to go to Harvard. Temple Beth Shalom isn't right for me, either -- I'd
be the only person between the ages of ten and twenty-seven.
The motions that I'm going through are things like keeping whatever
degree of Kosher I've ever kept, and -- well, that's about it.
I think I've assimilated too much here. I've lost that other set of
standards to which I used to hold myself; I've replaced my Jewish
conscience with an American one. So I still don't kill people, but
I do homework on Friday night.
