I would imagine he was probably angry about something and decided to
take it out on the first person who gave him an iota of an excuse.
Also, if you don't mind a bit of more personalized commentary (I
guarantee it's worth what you pay for it :-), you tend to have strong
reactions to subtle things people say or do. I find this one of your
strong points as it makes you easy to talk to, but it does have the
unfortunate consequence of making you vulnerable to someone who is in a
foul mood and just wants to hurt someone at random (pun noticed but not
intended).
