Slap in the face out of the blue

This morning i dragged myself out of bed at 9am. Surprisingly, another
person, whom i rarely (if ever) see up that early, was up also. I didn't
say anything about it to him or ask him why, knowing that i shouldn't
intrude upon his life and knowing that he probably didn't get much sleep.
As i was having breakfast, he came into the kitchen to have breakfast as
well. Someone else did a double-take when she saw him, again because he's
never up that early. She made some slightly teasing remarks like "What's
wrong?" or such. I just kind of smiled and laughed. He didn't say anything.
Then another person came in and noticed that he was up awfully early. She
asked him, rather seriously, "Why are you up so early?"

And he said something like: "Since Julie is here, I can't tell you. There
were an obnoxious set of circumstances and if I explain them, Julie will
only tease me." (or something to that effect)

<slap!> ouch. i have no idea where that came from. (oh, i forgot to mention
that before the person asked seriously, i had something like, "That's the
third double-take this morning," referring to his being awake so early.)
OK, so maybe it came from the fact that i wasn't being very serious about
his being up so early and i was giving him a teasing hard time as usual.

and then to top things off he said, looking at me: "Does that answer your
question?"

i had nothing decent to say to him. i didn't say anything. i quicky, very
quickly finished up breakfast. i went to get my stuff to leave, and when i
came back through the kitchen he was explaining to someone why he was up
so early. i didn't listen.

as i left, i said "Have a nice day" to him and the others in general. he
said something, but i didn't understand it.

yeah, have a nice day, dude. thanks for ruining mine.
