Voting Procedures in Cambridge

I voted in Massachusetts today for the first time, having moved here
from Washington DC. I found two depressing aspects of voting here
(ignoring the candidates and the issues)...
1) You don't have to show any proof of address or of having
registered to vote.
2) When ballots are handed in, the stubs are torn off and
thrown in a trash can.
Are these practices normal throughout the state, or local to the place
I voted? Does every precinct use Votomatic machines?
