Check out Umberto Eco's _Name of the Rose. The movie was based upon
it, but the book has an incredible more amount of depth. It's sort
of a murder mystery in a 14th century abbey, but it really gives ypu
a feel for the time period and the social/religious/political structure
(all the same thing, actually) of the day.

I have this vision of Sean Connery in my head every time I hear the main
character talk, however.

P.S. Is there a book discuss meeting by any chance? I bet especially a
SF one would get a lot of posters, but a gernal one might be appropriate
      as well.
