Sounds like it's time for a bike light, henry...or heavier rims.
Or, there's this really cool trick you can learn where you jump
the bike over obstacles...lots o' fun! Of course, it requires
that you see the obstacle before you get to it :)
I was barrelling down Vassar street about a year ago, in the dark, in
the rain, with no light, and suddenly saw this 8" wide by 4" deep trench
cut across the road right in front of me. I "learned" how to jump
the bike real quick. Sort of "panic engineering" -- apply something
I'd read in rec.bikes in about a second...worked, though.
