As mentioned in this message, the SIPB discuss software should be
referencing /usr/sipb. You are making assumptions as to the locations
of binaries.

Ted: Odie does get discuss feeds when it is deactivated. "mkserv
discuss" does work; I'm not going to hack odie to accomodate SIPB's
assumptions that their software is in /usr/local, when in the past, it
always referenced /usr/sipb - stick to one standard.

it might be related to the /mit/sipb/foobin/discuss bug. it looks for a
copy of /usr/local/disserve for local discuss meetings, which of course
crashes on any other machine besides charon or bloom-beacon.

This isn't a bug; it's a mis-configuration on odie's part.
/usr/local/disserve *should* be there, or odie should be providing its
own copies of all discuss binaries.... It's a bad idea for SIPB
software to be dependant on athena software; Athena isn't the entire
world, you know. (That's why all SIPB software is supposed to point to
/usr/sipb --- that way people who might want to use our software at the
Media-lab or at Tech^2 aren't hosed by this /mit/sipb nonsense, which
can't be found on Unix machines anywhere else in the world.) Besides,
up till recently, Athena didn't even support discuss, making the discuss
program look for /usr/etc/disserv wouldn't have made any sense at all.
(I should also note that /usr/etc is found only on athena, where
/usr/local is nice and standard.)

Go tell Richard to install a sym link between /usr/etc/disserv and
/usr/local/disserv; or better yet, if he wants mail feeds to any of his
discuss meetings work when his workstation is deactivated, to *copy*
/usr/etc/disserv to /usr/local/disserv. That's where it belongs.
