didn't the X10 xdvi have a magnifying region that moved with the
cursor? How hard would this be to do in X11? It would be really
useful...

It's been done already -- the new version of xdvi in sipbsrc does
it.
I haven't installed it yet because I'm not 100% convinced I've fixed
all of the "features" in the new version that were just gratuitous
changes to the defaults that shouldn't have been made (e.g. he changed
the default mag to 3 just because he likes it that way, and didn't
make it clear how to change it back).
I also haven't had time to deal with it.
