The linux binaries in the octave locker were so old, they were
segfaulting as soon as they were invoked. I couldn't get octave to
build (See today's zlogs -c sipb -i octave for a description of the
problems I ran into. I had the same problems with the latest version of
octave and the g++ in the gcc-3.2 locker.) so I extracted the files in
the rpm
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/sourceforge/rpmsforsuse/octave-2.0.17-1.i386.rpm
and copied them to the appropriate places in the octave locker. It
seems to run, on the cursory tests I've made so far. It's doing much
better than its segfaulting predecessor. I still need to add
attach-and-run scripts to cope with the fact that some programs it uses
like gnuplot are in other lockers.
There is also an apparently unexecutable copy of octave in the outland
locker, at /mit/outland/arch/i386_linux1/bin/octave. I removed the
symlink to it in arch/bin/i386_linux24.
