The keybindings for viewing subfolders and for navigating subfolders
are confusing -- I had problems with them myself, and this may be what
you're seeing.
The "Return" key always activates the "View Folder" command, which
will show you the messages in a folder. But it does not navigate into
subfolders. To navigate into subfolders, you need to use the
"View Dir" command, which will be on the key ">" (or ".").
