mutt 1.4 doesn't like imaps://

There's a bug I've noticed that's cropped up in the transition from
mutt 1.3.2x to 1.4 on athena.
If my .muttrc references my mailbox/folder/spoolfile as
"imaps://tarvizo@po12.mit.edu/INBOX", all sort of oddness results.
For mailbox or folder, mutt gets to (no mailbox) and the status message:
Authenticating (SASL)...
and no further attemps to access that po12 via imaps works.
Setting the spoolfile to imaps means I can't browse my folders (and,
presumably, write to them).
Additionally, setting imap_force_ssl also causes the Authenticating
message.
In the meantime, replacing imaps:// with imap:// works, but I'd like
to also have it work with imaps. (I've got one .muttrc across several
sites and I'd like to keep them consistent.)
