(I've deleted redundancies from the following -- try it yourself to
find out exactly what it says.)

pit-manager% /mit/sipbsrc/rt/xdvi/xdvi /usr/sipb/doc/guide/guide.dvi
Font t-romsc at 330 dpi [not found]
Font t-obl at 270 dpi [not found]
Font t-obl at 360 dpi [not found]
Can't find <t-obl>, using <cmr10> instead at 360 dpi
Font t-rom at 240 dpi [not found]
Font t-bol at 750 dpi [not found]
Font t-rom at 510 dpi [not found]
xdvi: Not all pixel files were found
pit-manager%

Notice how the new xdvi is smart enough to substitute where it can
find a cmr10 font to use; however, cmr10 fonts don't exist for most of
the sizes it's trying to find.

I think this is a bug because people should be able to preview our
documents using xdvi. The solution is to build pk files for cmr10 in
240, 270, 330, 360, 510, and 570 dpi (xdvi was looking for them here
but could not find them), and install the new version of xdvi that
knows to do font substitution.

I would do this myself, but I don't know how to build pk files,
although I just spent about a half hour browing sipbsrc trying to
figure it out.

If this gets done, could whoever does it please show me the process
involved in building pk files?

  jik
