More on the load situation...
I saw a large number of NFS timeouts on snork, likely due to bogus
mount points to down machines. That may have been causing the
inflated load average & slow response time (and could also have
clogged news...).
I have turned off toehold & reduced the number of NFS server daemons
to 1 instead of 8 (as before). I also disabled auto-attach of
homedirs at login time. The webster server is still enabled.
I rebooted snork, and the load is now down to under 1, with occasional
excursions to 1.5 or so. It probably goes higher during the day; I'll
watch for that during the day tomorrow.
Please don't renable toehold or home dir attach until friday; I want
to see if the cause of the load inflation was indeed the news, or as a
result of the machine being used as a workstation.
[I will point out (again) that snork was originally given to SIPB as a
news server; it is *finally* being put to the purpose it was
originally intended.]
