In case the USENET people don't realize it, a _lot_ of people have
been complaining (in person) about webster lately. The primary
problem is that Snork is being used as a news server, and thus always
has a load of at least 5. This makes the webster server too slow to
be useful in many cases. In addition to this problem, the office has
been very busy recently and Snork needs to be used as a workstation
quite frequently. Unfortunately, this is impossible (it took me over
20 minutes to just _login_ yesterday). I request that a proposal be
made to Athena to request new hardware immediately, and that Snork be
decomissioned as a news server ASAP.

Subject: Broken webster server?
Date: Tue, 31 Oct 89 10:00:31 EST

There was a time I was able to use xwebster quite successfully to
look up most words, and it behaved well for most misspelled words even
quite long ones. Recently, in the last week or so, xwebster has been
crashing so frequently that it has become practically useless, and the
words I've been trying to lookup are generally shorter than they used
to be. Has something changed? Judging by your error message, it would
seem that you don't consider the crashes I've been experiencing to be
real problems because of the misspelled words I've been looking up.
Since I use xwebster primarily for spelling, I find the attitude your
message conveys a bit parochial. Are there any plans to make
xwebster/webster more robust?
