xscreensaver weirdness

this happens consistently after i leave myself logged in for long
enough:
janeks-box:29521.null% echo $DISPLAY
:0.0

access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect
INET:localhost

LOCAL:
janeks-box:29521.null% xscreensaver
Error: Can't open display: :0.0
janeks-box:29521.null% setenv DISPLAY localhost:0.0
janeks-box:29521.null% xscreensaver
(starts ok)
I won't have time to play with debugging it for a couple of weeks if
someone else wants to take a stab at it.
