Hello SIPB.
Over the past several years, I've been doing some small amount of
general maintenance on the sipb locker. By "general maintenance", I
mean things like:
- Responding to bug reports on old software that no longer has a
specific maintainer.
- Checking for newer versions of old installed software.
- Searching the 'net for new cool stuff to be installed in the sipb locker.
- Building old stuff for new platforms.
- Trying to create some guidelines / standards / documentation about how
to maintain software in the sipb locker.
Granted, I haven't always done a great job on these tasks, but I'm
still fairly proud of how much I've gotten done.
But my day has come and gone. I've graduated from this fine
Institution, and I still think the `S' in SIPB should mean something.
I think one or two of you students should tell me "Step aside, old
man!" and take over general maintenance of the sipb locker.
Or at least volunteer to help with it.
Here are the requirements for the job:
- You should know how (or be willing to learn) to use some common
tools, such as "make" and "rcs". You should be willing to spend some
time running "make install" over and over again, and verifying that
the install was successful and that the software works.
- You should be willing and able to track down bugs in C programs.
(Responding to bug reports is the fun part of the job. Running
"make all" and "make install" for the same program over and over
on lots of platforms is the boring part.)
- On rare occasions, be willing to do some research about some obscure
Unix feature that you know nothing about to figure out why some
program doesn't work.
- You should read /afs/sipb/project/doc/sipb-locker/fsstnd, which is
the closest thing we have to a guide to maintaining stuff in the sipb
locker.
If you want to help, let me know and I'll try to point you in the
right direction. And eventually, I'll just fade away and let you kids
run the show. :-)
Have a nice day,
Sal.
