(I'm cc'ing this to the bug-outland mailing list, since that list
contains a higher fraction of relevant people.)
Hello,
If 1.00 requires students to have a JDK1.1.5-capable web
browser, we urge you to download and install Netscape 4.0.6.
The reason is that we do not try to keep software in the outland
locker stable. It is an area for testing new or fun programs.
Most of the time things work, but correcting bugs in outland can
be quite low on our priority list. If netscape were to break one
day, it could take quite a while for a maintainer to get around
to fixing it. In the meantime, your students might have a
difficult time working on the class.
(Note that you should no longer be in danger of the netscape in
the outland locker expiring on Oct 16, because it was updated
from PreRelease1 to PR2 on Tuesday. So far, things seem to be
working fine. The recommendation is still the same, though:
SIPB cannot provide the outland locker with the same level of
reliability that I/S can provide the infoagents locker. Students'
coursework should not depend on a program in the outland locker.)
Sincerely,
Jacob Morzinski jmorzins@mit.edu
SIPB software maintainer
(a Post Script: if all you need is a JDK1.1.5-capable java
environment, I know that the java locker has recently been
upgraded to JDK v1.1.6. Perhaps it is worth re-evaluating.)
