Problem with 'inews'?

Sipb folks:
I just used the utility 'Pnews' to post a message and got this weird
message:
/mit/sipb/linuxbin/inews: can't load library '/libc.so.4'
I made a link in my root directory as:
ln -s /usr/i486-linuxaout/lib/libc.so.4 /libc.so.4
And this solved the problem, but shouldn't inews be getting this path
from somewhere else? Is there a way I can fix my machine so I don't
need this link in my root directory?
I'm using the Athena Redhat distribution, but I haven't run the update
script in the last two weeks or so...
