I believe that these problems are due to bugs in rn which we haven't
precisely identified. I would recommend that you do the following:
1. Check your .newsrc file and make sure that it makes sense
(i.e. doesn't look like a mail message or anything). Each
line of the .newsrc file should consist of a newsgroup
name, a '!' or ':' depending on whether you're subscribed,
and a list of article numbers you have read in that
newsgroup.
2. Start using trn instead of rn. The user interface for trn
is similar to rn's, although it has some extra features.
