LaTeX, et al. were originally changed to not be undumped because each
copy of the undumped program was around 1 meg of disk space.  Not only
did this waste disk space (we had TeX, LaTeX, SliTeX, AmSTeX,
GermanTeX, etc; one meg per program), but over NFS, it was faster to
load the small virtex and interpret lplain.fmt (around .25 meg total
for both programs).  I suspect that over AFS, you will find that this
argument will still hold.  Besides, the second time you run LaTeX, the
format is on local disk, right?
