While this seems like a reasonable optimization, it's important to
realize that a client or dedicated sub-client can never assume that
it's actually getting the `real' copy of the document. For simple
clients accessing files directly, this seems a bit odd until you think
about caches, proxies, url mapping, and the fact that web clients
don't really ever see a filename path; the URL's just look like UNIX
paths and sometimes subsume them.
That said, I'm certainly not going to object if someone wants to
change mosaic to do that - just make sure that you don't break
proxy/cahceing support.
