Same thing with dialup (non-2). What's up? Or rather, please fix if
this is your fault. Someone called in flaming...

You seem to be just a little bit confused.

This has never worked. If you are not logged into dialup or dialup2,
then you are not in the /etc/passwd file. Ftp only looks in the
/etc/passwd file (currently). Therefore, if you try to ftp to dialup
or dialup2 as aaron when you are not logged in to either machine, you
will lose. As a counter-example, suppose that I *am* logged into
dialup2 and I ftp to it:

   pit-manager% finger @dialup2
   [M11-111-2.MIT.EDU]
   ...
   jik Jonathan I. Kamens p8 Mon 19:47 m11-205; e40 x3-4261
   pit-manager% ftp dialup2
   Connected to M11-111-2.MIT.EDU.
   220 dialup2 FTP server (Version 4.133 Fri May 20 15:27:24 EDT 1988) ready.
   Name (dialup2:jik):
   331 Password required for jik.
   Password:
   230 User jik logged in.
