i know that there are other file transfer protocols in the public
domain (XMODEM, YMODEM, ZMODEM). these tend to provide somewhat higher
throughputs, although in some cases error detection/correction
suffers. i snarfed a copy of some utilities which handle this type of
file transfer on the athena end from uunet.uu.net (at the suggestion
of somebody out in net.land). i've compiled it and done some limited
testing; it seems to work fine.

Sipb already supports xmodem in /usr/sipb/vaxbin/tmodem -- type "man
-M /usr/sipb/man tmodem" for a man page.

Also, the amiga filesystem contains an xmodem in
/mit/amiga/system/xmodem which, I believe, supports ymodem and zmodem.

However, if the sources you've pulled from uunet support all of these,
I see no reason not to install them in the sipb locker. Mail me a
pointer to where I can read the sources from, and I will do the
compiling and installing.

jik

P.S. Thanks.
