To the best of my knowledge, it [apropos or man -k] only checks the
apropos file in the first directory. Clearly a lose.
Not so; the man we have in /usr/ucb checks all directories in MANPATH:
snorkelwacker% echo $MANPATH
/mit/watchmaker/man:/usr/sipb/man:/mit/consult/man:/usr/man:/mit/games/man:/mit/StaffTools/man
snorkelwacker% man -k xscreensaver
xscreensaver (SIPB) - blanks and/or locks display
