This is because vi on the sparc seems to be configured to use terminfo
rather than termcap, and there's no xterm terminfo entry installed. I
will send mail to bug-sparc about this. In the meantime, vi can be used
if you do `setenv TERM vt100; unsetenv TERMCAP' first in your xterm,
because there *is* a vt100 terminfo entry.
