May I make a suggestion? For the past couple of months, I have been
spending a little of my spare time preparing new versions of TeX,
METAFONT, and dvips for installation in the sipb locker (with AMSTeX and
TeX-XeT support and other neat hacks). After examining the current
space usage, I quickly realized that it won't be possible for me to
install all of this in the sipb volume. An idea that crossed my mind is
creating a replicated "tex-install" volume which would contain just the
binaries, fonts, and macros needed for these programs, and creating
symlinks in the SIPB locker to this volume. The sipb volume is rather
large and unwieldy as AFS volumes go, and that tends to trigger bugs in
the server software. Also, the TeX software is less important now than
it was when Athena didn't have it, so it's not so important that it be
bundled with the rest of the SIPB software.

I will try to make the meeting tonight to make this comment in person.
I sincerely hope that we don't have to get into a variant of the "lockers
vs. packs" discussion that Athena is going through, even though there
are some similarities between their problem and ours.
