I'm not going to argue with you. I think that I did a reasonable thing,
and it would have been better if you were around at the time, but you
weren't. I consulted with other sipb members and with consultants who
were dealing with the complaints about these programs before I did
anything, and my decision was not an individual one. I will gladly
respect your request as maintainer of these programs and restore them to
their previous state, but I am not going to concede to being "wrong" in
choosing one of many possible solutions when there is not a consensus
on what the best one is.
My personal opinion on the shared libary issue is that Athena should
invest the required time and resources to replicate and support the
x11r5 locker, because at some point a move to x11r5 will be desireable.
I think there are more developers using them and counting on them than
they suspect. This, in addition to a stock answer which explains what is
wrong if a shared libary is not found, should suffice. Currently, this
issue is only an RS/6000 question for Athena, but it will soon be a Sun
question as well. It would be nice if it were possible to keep all of
the shared libraries on the local disk, but I don't know whether or not
that is feasible; the cluster machines are already completely dependent
on AFS (xlogin won't start if the system packs are unavailable), so the
risk of AFS lossage has already been deemed acceptable.
