I will forward your suggestions to the maintainer of xrn.

I know that at some point in the past, someone was working on a
"threaded version" of xrn. Those changes were supposedly going to get
incorporated back into the main xrn sources at some point; I don't
know what happened to them.

Note that the new version of xrn, which is currently in beta-test,
does do more pre-fetching than the version installed as "xrn" in the
sipb locker, and therefore does appear to be somewhat faster. You can
run it by using "betaxrn" instead of "xrn", but if you have any xrn X
resources in your .Xresources file, they will have to use the program
name "betaxrn" or "XRn2" instead of "xrn" or "XRn". The betaxrn
installed in the sipb locker is quite stable at this point, so you
shouldn't encounter any problems with it (if you do, by all means, let
us know).

Note that we are currently in the process of switching over to a new
news server which, we hope, will be significantly faster than the
current one. When that switchover occurs, things should be faster in
any case.
