What it means depends on the origin of the message. The message should
come to you with a signature of the form
System Daemon AT nodename, via SIPB BITNET gateway
Most often, the "nodename" in the above form will be MITVMA. In that
case, there are two likely explanations:
1) Some part of the BITNET software on one of MIT's IBM mainframes
is not running. This effectively blocks all BITNET access from
MIT. This is usually a temporary condition and is corrected by
the mainframe staff who monitor its network connections. To find
out if the mainframe system is actually shut down (which would
cause a longer-term outage), you can call the status recording
number at x8-7700.
2) Spelling errors. This is the error message that is produced
if you spell the nodename (cspgce11) wrong.
If the nodename is not MITVMA, it indicates a temporary failure of the
BITNET network (hardware or software) somewhere outside MIT. For
example, if the nodename is CSEARN, it means that the network outage
is somewhere inside Czechoslovakia.
