Hi,
I happily noticed that we have recently gained the fj.* newsgroups (a
Japanese news hierarchy, in Kanji). Hopefully this will be great for
students of Japanese as well as for Japanese members of the MIT
community.
Last night on a vaxstation I tried what I thought would be an obvious
method to read them --- use gnus from within nemacs (after all, the
emacs gnus news reader was written by someone in Japan) (nemacs is the
japanese version of emacs in /mit/nihongo). However this didn't work,
it still just showed the ascii characters (I assume shift jis) rather
than the kanji. I poked around a little in the nemacs info hierarchy
and tried a few things (like m-x change-display-code or something like
that) but didn't get anywhere, so I thought I'd ask if someone else
has figured out this problem:
Has someone figured out how to read the fj.* newsgroups, particularly
using gnus in nemacs? If so, please put a note in the
/mit/nihongo/README file or some such place.
Arigatoo,
Carl Manning
(p.s. I have heard that not all news feeds work for the fj.*
hierarchy, as some strip out some characters used for the kanji
encoding, such as the escape character. I don't think that's a
problem here since each line started with a (^[ = ascii escape) and
thus it looks like it contains the kanji-in escape sequence used by
the 7 bit JIS codes. So I think the problem is in the reader, not the
news.)
