I suggest /usr/tmp, which has a 3 day timeout. I think even /tmp with delete
on logout would be good enough on a DECstation 5000 or RS/6000 (metafont
seemed to generate about a character every 1-2 seconds on a VAX 6430, which
is a little more than a third as fast per processor as a DEC 5000/25).
