When I was preparing dvips, I disabled this feature because we were
unable to come up with a satisfatcory solution to the problem of
where to store the fonts.
* The user's homedir was rejected because .gf fioles can be large,
and users are always pushing their quota limits.
* /tmp was rejected because it would not cause the fonts to be saved
on a regular basis. [Now that computrons are faster, this may be
an acceptable option.]
* /mit/texfonts was rejected because we didn't want that filling up
with everyboduy's special needs; and because we were afraid of the
bitbucket effect.
I would love to see MAKETEXPK restored to dvips.
