I find it hard to believ that it is "exiting cleanly" when it exits.
It seems more likely to me that it is segfaulting or something, but
that since your .newsrc has been recently checkpointed, you aren't
losing much.
Please do "betaxrn*Debug: true" in your .Xresources, which should
cause it to dump core if it exits. I might be able to do something
with a coredump.
