Every year, my chapter publishes a book called Felicitations
which contains the names and addressed of the new
students(freshmen and transfers) and pictures of those who send
them in. This book is sold by order-form(included in the big
packet the college sends out) for $5. The college usually buys
copies for faculty and some administrative staff as well(at cost).
The problem: Due to complaints he received about a low number of
pictures(20% of the class) last year, the director of PR at Hope
has chosen not to buy books this year(the picture turnout was
about the same as last year).
Because the printing costs are largely in the preparation, and
not the actual printing, Nu Beta is going to end up paying $7
per book. Careful readers will note this means a $2-loss per
book, which comes out to a total loss of about $400.
Advertising in the book will probably cover most of this loss,
and possibly even let us get away with a profit(I haven't added
them up), but it won't be much. Felicitations is the major/only
fundraiser we do(I'm working on that), so this will hurt us.
My question is: would it be better to go ahead and take the
loss(assuming, of course, that we can afford it in the first
place) or cancel the whole thing and return everyone's money(I
have 187 pre-paid orders right now) and let them be mad at us?
I'm also going to talk to Nu Beta's president (and a couple
past-presidents if I can) about this, but I could use all the
advice I can get.
Please send your recommendations(or any other courses of action
you might see).
Thanks for your time!
Yours in Leadership, Friendship, and Service,
Eric Rossing Hope College Holland, Mi 49423
