Normally I would reply to everyone that wrote me in my I'm back
posting, except there were so many of you. First off let me tell
you that I am still in Region 7. I went toobin' with The wonderful
regional director Neil Farmer just three days ago. So for all of you
that want me to get in touch with my regional director and/or
a sectional staff member, been there, done that.
Now to tell you where I am.. I am in that mega metropolis of
Midland, Texas. It is dead in the middle of REAL West Texas.
Lubbock is the closest town with an established instution of higher
learning, Texas Tech and they also happen to be the closest APO Chapter
as well. There are community colleges in Midland and Odessa (the other
closest town of any substance) but, JUCO's don't fall into the extension
plans of the fraternity. The University of Texas at the Permain Basin
just recently became a 4 year instution, but that status is only about 2
years old. UTPB is still an MBA or finish your BS/BA/BBA school after JUCO.
I seem to recall that 75% or more of the students at UTPB are over 30
and already have a degree of some kind. Maybe that will change,
but I don't know.
Things here don't get any more spread out.. here is a run down of potential
or established sites and approximate driving times from my location:
Lubbock: 2 hours (1 1/2 if the cops aren't out)
Abilene: Hardin Simmons (Benny's Chapter for those of you that were in boston)
Abilene Christian (2 maybe 2 1/2 hours)
San Angelo: Angelo State University (2 Hours)
Alpine: Sul Ross State University (2 1/2 maybe 3 hours)
TEXAS CITIES THAT PEOPLE KNOW OF:
Dallas: 5 Hours
Austin: 6 Hours
Houston: 10 Hours
In other words, if you don't include UTPB (30 minutes) everything is two
or more hours away. It's not that I wouldn't like to be involved, but from
a very practical standpoint it doesn't look too good.
I'll take any advice that any of you regional directors and
sectional chairmen have to offer (and our wonderful list
administrator), but once you look at a map of Texas you'll see what
I'm talking about.
Here's to the middle of nowhere!
