I agree that letting someone know about which students have been members of
your chapter is a good idea. I strongly suggest that you check with your
registrar or alumni office to find out which lists they can use.
My reason is this: At Central Michigan University, the Alumni Office keeps
alumni addresses and organizational affiliations. However, they only keep
track of alumni (people who received a degree from the school) and it takes
them 3-4 months to get new graduates entered into the computer. In this case,
you need to give a list of graduating students, usually about the end of the
next semester.
It also pays to have them run a list so that you can cross check that with a
listing from Nationals in order to weed out incorrect entries. Depending upon
regulations, they may also be able to give you a relatively current address
list for alumni members or print mailing labels for them. It is a good idea
to give them address changes, as you will probably find out about them quicker
than they will. This also gives you a backup in case your records are
destroyed. If you are using their resources to research alumni, keep in mind
that not everyone may be put into the computer. At CMU, when they origionally
entered alumni, any deceased or "inactive" (no current address, no recent
donations, etc..) alumni were not entered. If you have an address for people
that are not listed on the Alumni Sheets, it may be because the school
doesn't.
