In Spring of 1979, when Alpha Epsilon Chapter at Louisiana State University
was still a recharter petitioning group, we fielded an intramural softball
team and needed a team name that nobody else would have thought up. Someone
jokingly suggested the "APO Escargot". It rhymed with APO and would never in
a million years be duplicated by anyone else. Since no one came up with
anything better, it was adopted. From that beginning, a pictorial represen-
tation was created of a snail with the Greek letters on his shell. He was
nicknamed "Slugger" since the team was playing softball at the time. Then
someone got a live snail, put him in a jar with some grass inside and air
holes punched in the lid, and carried him to each game as well as some chapter
meetings and other events. Although the live "Slugger" did not last long,
the chapter newsletter is still called the "Snail Tales"; the drawing of
"Slugger" with the letters on his shell, a baseball cap on his head, and a
bat in his hand is still used regularly; and the moniker "APO Escargot" is
still used for all of our intramural teams, regardless of what sport.
Isn't it strange how traditions often get started?
